“AN ANCIENT ROMAN PATH”

For those hoping to embark on an alpine adventure during your stay at Albergo Miramonti – you should give the Via Valeriana path a try, which passes right in front of our hotel.

Built-in Roman times, it represented the main artery for the transportation of goods between Valtellina and Val Camonica, as recently as the late 19th-century. Walking along its path, one could have continued on beyond the Aprica Pass and onto Switzerland. The road is still accessible to excursionists of all levels for either relaxed walks or gentle bicycle rides.  It is for the most part still in its original condition, keep an eye out for some of the ancient stones that were originally used to pave the way back in Roman times.

As for today, it continues to be a trail widely used by visitors and locals to enjoy the picturesque views of the Italian Alps. While walking through the Via Valeriana, you will encounter many intriguing sights and activities along the trail. You can admire the panoramic views of abundant evergreen forests, pick up some sweet wild-berries, or even forage for the famously-adored porcini mushrooms from the Corteno Valley (in the summer months). Either cycling or hiking through the Alpine passes would be most practical! Although, whichever way you choose to take this journey, you are guaranteed to catch some amazing sights - ones of which are unforgettable!

DIRECTIONS

The Via Valeriana is an activity that’s great year-round - no matter which season it is. From the lushness of the summer-sun to the kaleidoscope of colours that autumn brings - just make sure that you are prepared. During winter, the paths are covered in snow - so ensure your snow boots are at the ready!

You can start your journey to Aprica right outside our Alpine hotel - immediately turn left as you reach the path. Proceed through Via Libertà, then Via I Maggio. At the crossroad, turn right along Via Domazzo and keep driving along the Ogliolo River. Once you arrive in the small town of Fucine-Les, continue along Via Campagnola and follow the silver and red signs with Via Valeriana written on it. Continue into the woods, ignoring every crossroad and going straight. Eventually, you will arrive at the village of S. Pietro, where the modern Via Valeriana of Aprica begins.
