Transhumance Festival

 Transhumance Festival

The traditional Lombardy cuisine features a lot of meat and cheese and what do we need for that? Plenty of livestock! Many farmers in the region of Lombardy happen to practice transhumance. It’s a form of pastoralism, whereby farmers migrate with their livestock - taking them to the best pasturelands year-round. It takes place to ensure that the animals are getting fed as best as they possibly can, whilst ensuring the area’s resources are not over-exploited. It’s a much more sustainable method in comparison to intensive livestock farming.

“many people flock to watch their livestock pass through their village”

The migrant farmers travel high during the Spring, so they can make the most of the warmer months until they begin their descent in the Fall - to escape the harsh winter conditions of the high Alpine valleys. The tradition is celebrated yearly and although it is slowly decreasing in culture, many farmers are fighting to keep the practice alive. That’s not to say that it’s not an interesting sight! Many people flock to watch the livestock pass through their village and it just so happens it can be seen not far from our Award-Winning Boutique Hotel - it’s a great bit of entertainment for our guests. Just ask down at reception to find out if the transhumance festival is taking place during your stay with at Albergo Miramonti!
