4 Tasty Italian Beverages to Try this Winter
Winter is the time to cosy up, sit by the fireplace and enjoy a warm drink. In Italy, there are a variety of different winter beverages you can try, which are all undoubtedly delicious. As an Alpine Hotel, we’re all too familiar with the different beverages and cocktails that are consumed throughout the winter season. So, below, we’ve listed four incredible drinks you can try whether you're ordering it in Italy or make some for yourself.
AMARETTO COFFEE
“FOR THE COFFEE-LOVERS”
When you're thinking of warm Italian beverages - coffee is undoubtedly on the top of the list. Italians love coffee. Everywhere around the country, you can find bars that serve coffee and a side of small nibbles as a nice break from the day. To find out more about Italian coffee culture, read "How to Drink Coffee Like An Italian". But one of the most unique, and delicious drinks you can try is 'Amaretto coffee'. As you know, amaretto is a fantastic liquor for the Winter season, especially with its prominent notes of bitter almond. When you combine both coffee and amaretto, it makes a beautiful little cocktail to enjoy during the cold season. Garnish it with some whip creams and almonds, then voila!
VIN BRULE
“A CLASSIC FESTIVE FAVOURITE”
What is winter without mulled wine? In Italy, they like to call it 'Vin Brule'. Vin Brule is a lovely warm beverage to have during the winter season, whether it is to drink while strolling around Christmas markets or making a potful of it for a Christmas party - it is an excellent drink to get you feeling a lot more festive and enjoy an Italian Christmas. The beverage consists of aromatic ingredients such as cinnamon sticks, lemon zest, nutmeg, star anise - combined with red wine.
BOMBARDINO
“THE PERFECT APRES SKI DRINK”
Travelling to an Italian Ski Resort this winter? Then it's likely that you're going to come across this delicious warm beverage called 'Bombardino'. If you like eggnog, then you're sure to like bombardino. It is mixed with brandy and with eggnog (or advocaat), and in terms of variations, you can often find coffee, rum or whiskey in the mix. But why is it called bombardino? With a combination of alcohol and hot temperature, it is sure to make you feel like a 'bomb'.
ZABAIONE
“CREAMY AND LIGHT”
Interchangeable as a dessert or beverage, Zabaglione is a custard-like Italian dessert that is popularly consumed during the festive season. It is a very popular drink all over Italy, with it being known as Zabaione in Northern Italy and Zabaglione in Southern Italy. It consists of egg yolks, sugar and sweet wine (usually Moscato d'Asti or Marsala Wine). In terms of sides, you can add traditional Italian cookies such as Lingue di Gatto, Amaretti or Savoiardi. Just like Bombardino, it is a very similar beverage to eggnog.
